City looking for adopt-a-tree volunteers

Aug 9, 2022 | 1:14 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The City of Medicine Hat has launched a program to encourage residents to take a more active role in maintaining community-owned trees.

The Adopt-A-Tree project asks participants to water community trees near their property several times a week from now until the end of September.

Dave Genio, the manager of parks for the city parks and recreation department, says everyone benefits from the tree canopy in Medicine Hat.

While there’s no immediate threat to community trees, Genio says individual trees may be stressed simply because of how and where they were planted.

“A lot of the trees are in very small soil areas, in between boulevards, sidewalks and roadways,” says Genio.

“Not that there’s a concern with our trees, we’re just trying to improve the benefit of it, plus healthy trees decrease the potential for them getting diseases or becoming unhealthy and causing further problems,” explains Genio.

The pilot program will be open to 200 residents initially.

Information on how much water a tree might require can be found on the city website , along with the sign-up form.

Genio says residents should only notice a small increase in water consumption on their utility bills, and those who sign up will qualify for materials that might help in the care of the adopted trees.
