Digital paid parking coming to Towne Square

MEDICINE HAT, AB – There will be a new way to park in the city’s Towne Square and it won’t require feeding a meter with spare change.

Starting Monday, July 4, drivers will have to pay using Hot Spot, an app available on Android or Apple devices. Once the app has been downloaded, the city says users can then upload a balance to a virtual wallet which is used to make a digital payment while parked at Towne Square.

QR codes will also be placed at Towne Square for people who don’t have the app to pay by credit card.

Parking at Towne Square will be $1 an hour or $5 a day, and will take effect from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Parking will be free on evenings and weekends.

Aaron Nelson, manager of cultural experiences and events with the City of Medicine Hat, says there are some benefits to digital paid parking.

“One of which is if you don’t use all of your parking you can get a refund for your remaining parking. So let’s say you purchased parking for the day, but you only parked for three hours, you can get a refund for the pro-rated portion that you were not using the parking. You can also do pre-paid parking from home, from your desktop if you want to, and as well we will have some annual passes. So roughly half of the lot will be yearly parking passes, and you can register for those online as well,” he said.

City staff will be at Towne Square from July 4-8 to lend a helping hand to drivers who need some extra help using the app.
