Wet weekend doesn’t rain on Spectrum’s parade

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Hatters flocked to Kin Coulee Park this weekend to take part in the Spectrum Festival and all it had to offer.

The festival ran from Friday to Sunday with a kid’s zone, live music, beer gardens and new activities like a skate school and Pure Power Wrestling.

Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate. A downpour on Saturday cancelled one main stage performance and a wrestling event, but the rain didn’t stop people from passing through the gates.

“The turnout was better than expected,” says Justin Wright, Spectrum Festival president. “We were hoping to have between 3,000 and 5,000 people and we had just over 7,000.”

Wright says had it not been for the rain, the event would have likely met its stretch goal of 8,000 attendees.

This weekend’s festival was the first after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the first for Spectrum’s new board of directors.

Wright says the feedback has been positive so far and will be used to plan for next year’s event.

“It was really about learning from experience this year, figuring out what worked and what didn’t work,” says Wright. “One of the things I think we would look at is the wins. Pure Power Wrestling drew a big crowd, and that would definitely be something we look at bringing again.”

Wright adds the board will also look for opportunities to improve, saying the lay-out is something that will be reviewed for next year’s festival.

Planning for next year’s event is already underway as the board works to secure vendors and entertainment.

The Spectrum Festival is run by volunteers and anyone interested in volunteering, or sitting on the board, can contact Spectrum through its website.
