MEDICINE HAT, AB — The cenotaph in Riverside Veterans’ Memorial Park will turn 100 years old on May 24 this year, and there’s a move afoot to have the monument designated as a municipal historical resource.

The names of 235 local soldiers who died in the First World War, mainly in France are engraved on the cenotaph.

That includes two female nurses.

Eighty-two names of soldiers who died in the Second World War are also engraved in the red granite column, and one name from the war in Afghanistan.

The public services committee is recommending city council designate the cenotaph as a municipal historical resource.

Coun. Ramona Robins chairs the public services committee and says designation as a historical resource brings a measure of protection to the cenotaph.

“If the cenotaph is designated as a municipal historic resource, no person can alter it, disturb it, destroy it or repair it, except in accordance with the provisions of the bylaw,” explains Robins.

Members of the Royal Canadian Legion were on hand to lend their support to the designation during this morning’s public services committee meeting.
