Ottawa police call in reinforcements as convoy takes up positions around Parliament

Jan 28, 2022 | 2:37 PM

OTTAWA – Police in Ottawa have called in reinforcements as the first trucks in a convoy to protest a vaccine mandate for cross-border big-rig drivers arrive in the capital.

Chief Peter Sloly says the force is working with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, RCMP and other agencies to identify any potential threats to public safety.

Sloly says organizers have promised a peaceful demonstration and he’s hopeful that will be the case.

But he says there will be a “commensurate response” for anyone seeking to incite violence or spread hate.

As of this afternoon, more than 100 people had lined up along the sidewalk outside the gates to Parliament Hill, and vehicles lined the north side of Wellington Street, far past the Parliament buildings.

People waved flags and hollered as supporters drove by honking their horns.

Some seem to be settling in for the long haul, with one group setting up a barbecue on the sidewalk.
