Golf simulators becoming a popular way to play during winter

Jan 19, 2022 | 12:33 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Golfers can keep swinging for the fairways in the winter on a growing number of golf simulators in the city.

Simulators use cameras to detect your club speed and path while swinging.

Players can use their own clubs or clubs provided to practice their swing or play a full round indoors.

Mac Baker is the owner of Cottonwood Coulee Golf Course. He’s had an indoor golf simulator installed for five years and says the increase in popularity is due to updated technology.

“Since we started the technology they have come up with has made it a lot more fun and realistic.”

Matthew Serfas, Justin Morin and Jonny Seitz opened Studio Fore in Medicine Hat in November after wondering why the simulators weren’t more popular in the city.

“When we were doing our market research we found out that there were approximately 80,000 people servicing six golf courses currently. What are those people doing in the winter?”

These simulators hope to provide the golf community with a way to enjoy their sport without worrying about weather conditions year-round.

The facilities give anyone from avid golfers to casual beginners the opportunity to experience the sport indoors.

Simulators are also available around Medicine Hat at Desert Blume Golf Club, Six One Six Entertainment and Who’s Your Caddy Golf Shop.
