Wind warnings issued for southeastern Alberta

A wind warning is in effect for Medicine Hat and area with strong winds forecast for Monday night.

Environment Canada says winds gusting up to 90 km/h will begin in central Alberta this evening.

The strong wind gusts will sweep to the southeast, reaching the U.S. border near midnight. Winds will taper off from the north overnight, the statement says.

Blowing snow may cause poor visibility and a rapid drop in temperature will occur along with the winds. Temperature drops of 10 to 15 degrees Celsius are possible in a short period of time. Wet surfaces may freeze causing icy conditions.

The statement advises people to be prepared for poor travel conditions and that loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage.

The wind warning is in place for the Medicine Hat-Bow Island-Suffield, Cypress Hills Provincial Park-Foremost and Brooks-Strathmore-Vulcan areas.

To the west, a special weather statement has been issued for the Lethbridge-Taber-Milk River area.

Strong winds, snow, blowing snow and a rapid drop in temperature expected for southern Alberta tonight, according to the statement.

Northwest winds gusting up to 70 km/h will develop early this evening along the central foothills and will move southward thought the night. Gusty winds will reach Calgary in the evening and Lethbridge by midnight.
