Jan 10, 2022 | 11:11 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Shots were fired in a northeast neighbourhood on Saturday during a stand-off between police and a 67-year-old man.

The incident began around 3 p.m. at a home on Northlands Crescent NE. Police responded to the home for a report of a man with handgun who had been in a dispute with a woman inside the home.

Officers were able to assist the woman in getting out of the home safely but over the next few hours, police observed the man inside the home with the gun.

He repeatedly ignored commands that he was under arrest and at one point pointed his gun at police.

Officers fired several less-lethal rounds striking the man twice.

He fired back at members of the tactical team hitting the armoured rescue vehicle.

The man then tried to barricade himself inside the garage but police were able to take him safely into custody.

Police say through the use of specialized training and less-lethal force, this incident was brought to a safe conclusion.

He was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries and released a short time later.

Barry Reed is currently in custody facing several firearms-related charges including assault with a weapon, reckless discharge of a firearm and using a firearm in the commission of an offense.

His next court appearance is set for Jan. 12.

Police thank the public for their co-operation.
