Tigers head into holiday break with 5-3 loss to Lethbridge

MEDICINE HAT, AB – By no means did they deserve a lump of coal, but the Medicine Hat Tigers’ final game before the holiday break didn’t present the gift they had hoped for.

A Ty Nash goal with 7:39 remaining in regulation proved to be the difference maker, as the Tigers dropped their second game in a row to the Lethbridge Hurricanes 5-3 on Saturday night.

Teague Patton registered a goal and an assist in the loss for the Tigers, who head into the 10-day break with a record of 5-18-3-1.

The Hurricanes opened the night with a goal from defender Trevor Thurston just 1:47 into the contest, receiving a pass from Chase Wheatcroft and netting his second of the year.

Jett Jones doubled Lethbridge’s lead to 2-0 midway through the first, switching to the backhand shorthanded off a Medicine Hat turnover in the neutral zone.

Tigers forward Brayden Boehm got the home side on the scoresheet under a minute into the middle frame with a wrister that beat Bryan Thomson off the left side.

Lethbridge’s two-goal lead was restored late in the second courtesy of Nolan Bentham on the power play, coming off a bench and going post-in for the 3-1 lead.

Patton pulled the Tigers within one once again 3:15 into the third with a power play goal of his own, before a controversial moment in the game.

Lukas Svejkovsky let a shot go off the wing that seemed to fool Thomson with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, but was blown down with a whistle.

Under further review, the waived off goal was reversed and Svejkovsky’s equalizer would draw the Tigers even at 3-3.

Medicine Hat’s momentum didn’t last long however, as a wild scramble in the crease under two minutes later was finished off by Nash for the go-ahead goal.

Joe Arntsen added an empty net goal for the Hurricanes, sweeping all four points over the home-and-home series.

Garin Bjorklund had 28 saves in the loss for the Tabbies, while Thomson made 18 stops to help earn the two points for the ‘Canes.

Tigers players now head home for the holidays with their next contest not coming until December 28, as Medicine Hat visits the Calgary Hitmen at Scotiabank Saddledome.
