Change of mayor: Local expert weighs in on Clugston’s defeat

After a crushing loss in the municipal election to Linnsie Clark, outgoing mayor Ted Clugston blamed the pandemic for his loss in the race for mayor.

But, in an interview with CHAT News, Medicine Hat College political science instructor Jim Groom believes more than one factor came into play.

“Don’t think the pandemic per se was on the ballot right.. folks had observed certain things that have occurred over the last couple of years they weren’t pleased with and they felt this was the time to make a change,” Groom said.

Meanwhile, he believes the large showing of support at the polls for Clark will give her confidence to push for her priorities, such as a desire to keep recreational operations in local neighborhoods, as opposed to Clugston’s wish for new larger facilities.

But Groom also says he did expect a tighter race between Clark and Clugston.

“I thought it (would be) more competitive than the numbers showed in the end, but you can never second guess the electorate, the electorate is always right,” Groom said.

He added, “And it’ll be interesting to see relationships between Medicine Hat and our mayor and the UCP I think. Ted was seen as an ally for the UCP and I’m not sure if that will be the case going down the road.”

Groom says it was good to hear about positive relationships some candidates already have. For example, incoming councillors Andy McGrogan and Ramona Robins are friends.
