MEDICINE HAT, AB – Two local youth were recognized this week for reaching out when other youth needed it.

Justice Johnstone and Ellie Masson were honoured with Buddy Awards by the Medicine Hat chapter of Bikers Are Buddies.

Club president Tony Litousky says the Buddy Award to recognize kids that help other kids with bullies

“Either telling the bullies to leave them alone or talking them through and making sure they don’t do anything rash,” he explains.

He says Johnstone told some bullies to leave a friend of his alone, talked the friend through it and shred with him some defensive strategies.

Litousky says Masson stood up for her friend, defended her and taught her how to avoid and not pay attention to the bullies.

Litousky says Bikers Are Buddies strives to show society a different side of bikers.

“The stereotype of bikers has been bad throughout the years but I’ve been a motorcycle enthusiast for a lot of years now and most of the people I’ve met would give the shirt off their back to help you out,” he says. “It’s almost like a brotherhood I guess you would call it.”

He adds members of Bikers Are Buddies can also be a support group for those being bullied. He says in the past bikers have ridden with kids to and from school and even held meet and greets in their neighbourhoods.
