Redcliff Days will proceed, with precautions

REDCLIFF, AB — The Town of Redcliff is going ahead with its Redcliff Days celebration this weekend, even as the number of active infections from the corona virus remain at all-time highs locally.

But the decision to proceed wasn’t taken lightly, according to the town’s mayor.

Dwight Kilpatrick says the town received an email from Alberta Health Services expressing concerns about holding the event in light of the number of active cases.

The mayor says councillors debated what to do at a special meeting this past Monday.

“The two motions that were made at the council meeting; one was to have Redcliff Days with enhanced COVID measures, such as sanitation stations, signage, masking wearing and all that,” says Kilpatrick.

That motion was defeated in a tie vote of 3 to 3.

Kilpatrick says the second motion was to cancel Redcliff Days, and that was also defeated in a tie vote.

The mayor says they didn’t have the option of choosing another date.

This weekend was chosen after the traditional June date was ruled out due to public health restrictions then.

They chose this weekend, as the town has also been hosting a fall festival for the last few years, but even that was cancelled last year because of the pandemic.

Kilpatrick says all events are outdoors, although other groups will be having indoor bands, which, while out of the town control, are still within AHS guidelines.

“We will be having sanitation stations and signage; we’re not going to be telling people to wear masks, that is their option,” says Kilpatrick.

Kilpatrick says it’s understandable if some people choose not to come out, but says the pandemic has impacted the mental health of many and says it might be beneficial to get out, walk around and see different things.

Redcliff Days will begin at 4 p.m. with the official opening of the Redcliff Pressed Brick Park on Mitchell Street.

That’s the original site of the first brick plant in Redcliff, built in 1912.
