MEDICINE HAT,AB- Another person has stepped into the council race. Jeremy Silver has announced his intentions to run for a seat in the upcoming municipal election.

Silver is most known for his work in the community through the United Way Spirit of Christmas Feast which he started eight years ago. It has since grown to one of the largest community-supported Christmas dinners in Medicine Hat. Aside from his work with the United Way, Silver is also the past chair of the City Centre Development Agency.

“I think that I hold the ideals that all elected leaders should be public servants, and public servants should work in their community, be involved in their community to know what there community wants, and I think our elected leaders on a grand scale have really lost touch with their voter base, and I am hoping to bring that humanity back to politics,” Silver said.

His platform emphasizes reducing red tape within the city in order to make it easier for people to get their business licence, and appropriate permits. He said the issue is a complaint he has been hearing about for years.

“ I think the way that it is set up right now it actually hinders individual people from taking home-based businesses into retail and letting them support themselves, and that is one of the key factors in letting low-income people thrive,” he said.

On downtown revitalization, Silver said the downtown core has been neglected for 20 years, and he would like to see more effort put in to drive businesses into the area. He said the proposed downtown waterfront revitalization plan, looks ideal but he has his concerns.

“ I can see the downtown core being completely skipped over. The waterfront property being developed and drawing people out of the centre of downtown again which is not going to be good for businesses,” he said

Sliver also has concerns about the closure of River Road and how that will impact traffic and access to emergency services. He said much more homework is needed before the decision is made.

The future of recreation in the city is also a key issue. The city is currently in the process of developing its recreation master plan, and talks have been looming about closing ageing facilities, such as the Moose Rec centre and Crestwood pool. in order to meet city budget objectives.

Silver said he would like to see a more moderate approach to recreation and stated that better planning was required to ensure that there would be adequate money available well into the future,

“It wasn’t just today that those facilities were getting too old. This was poor planning on city council’s part they should have prepared long ago, and I would not support the closure of the facilities that they have currently closed.

The municipal election takes place on Oct. 18.
