Bunny Run Rabbit Rescue gives new life to feral rabbits

MEDICINE HAT-AB- A local bunny rescue is continuing to advocate and support the city’s feral rabbit population.

Bunny Run Rabbit Rescue has been helping dozens of feral rabbits since its inception two years ago.

According to Amanda Hennessey, president of the organization, it was formed to support domestic rabbits that were dumped by their owners and now live in the outdoors, an environment Hennessey said is not natural for domestic bunnies.

The organization was recently called to rescue rabbits near a city public works building on 23 Street. In total, twelve rabbits have been rescued so far. Rescuing rabbits, according to Hennessey involves many steps to ensure they are well cared for.

“ A couple of our members feed them, socialize them, kind of get to know them. We check on their health. If there have been any injured, we do an emergency pickup and take them right away. Otherwise, we bring them in we take them to the vet, and if they are old enough we get them spayed or neutered right away,” Hennessey said.

Fundraising efforts help pay for the care. Spaying and neutering is an important step, according to Hennesey because rabbits can have up to 14 babies a month, so the population can rapidly grow in just a short period.

Once spaying and neutering is complete, the rabbits are then placed in a foster home. Hennessey currently fosters 19 rabbits inside her home.

The goal is to eventually get the rabbits adopted.

The organization is currently looking or new foster families and those looking to adopt.
