OTTAWA — The Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada has been selected by the federal government to implement a new initiative to prevent abuse in sport.

Minister of Canadian Heritage Steven Guilbeault announced Tuesday that the SDRCC will deliver an independent safe sport mechanism aimed at implementing a universal code of conduct for federally funded sport organizations.

In a release, the ministry said the federal government will provide up to $2.1 million to the SDRCC to kick-start the new mechanism.

The release said the mechanism will provide athletes and organizations with an independent place to report cases of harassment, abuse and discrimination.

The announcement comes days after two-time Olympic medallist Jennifer Heil wrote an open letter to Guilbeault asking for better protections for abuse victims in Canadian sport.
