Update: Severe thunderstorm warning ends in Brooks, thunderstorm watch still in effect in Medicine Hat

Update: Environment Canada says a severe thunderstorm warning for Brooks and surrounding area has ended. Medicine Hat remains under a thunderstorm watch.

Update: Medicine Hat is now under a severe thunderstorm watch, according to Environment Canada. The City of Brooks is now under a severe thunderstorm warning.

Environment Canada says the storm is located near Brooks and is moving to the east at 50 km/h. The storm is capable of producing nickel to ping-pong-sized hail and heavy rain.

“Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors,” Environment Canada said.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are in effect when thunderstorms are capable of or already producing large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall.

NEWELL COUNTY, AB- Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Brooks and surrounding Newell County.

Environment Canada says conditions may be favourable for severe thunderstorms, that bring heavy winds, large hail and heavy winds .

A severe thunderstorm watch has also been issued for the following regions:

  • Foothills Co. near Blackie
  • M.D. of Taber near Enchant
  • Rocky View Co. near Chestermere Dalroy and Dalemead
  • Siksika Res. 146
  • Vulcan Co. near Arrowwood Herronton and Queenstown
  • Vulcan Co. near Carmangay and Champion
  • Vulcan Co. near Lomond Travers and Little Bow Reservoirs
  • Vulcan Co. near Milo
  • Vulcan Co. near Vulcan and Ensign
  • Wheatland Co. near Hussar
  • Wheatland Co. near Standard and Gleichen
  • Wheatland Co. near Strathmore Lyalta and Carseland

The national weather service says severe weather conditions could persist until late this evening.
