City work will cause detours starting next week

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Work on the final phase of the Kipling and Spencer Street Corridor Rehabilitation Project will begin after the long weekend.

On May 25, access to Kipling Street SE and Hutchinson Ave will be restricted at College Avenue SE, says the City of Medicine Hat in a release.

Businesses and residences on Spencer Street and Kipling Street SE will remain accessible from Kingsway Avenue SE and a temporary bypass road will provide public access to Canada Post, Medicine Hat Recovery Centre and the Gas Utility Building.

The city says the detour will remain in place for the next three weeks while crews complete the final portion of road rehabilitation, top-lift paving, landscaping and trail installation.

Starting on May 26, construction to replace aging and deteriorating water, sewer and storm system infrastructure on 12 Street SW will require the temporary closure of a critical entry point to the Kensington neighbourhood.

The intersection at Bullivant Crescent SW and 12 Street SW will be closed and a bypass road over the northwest corner of the nearby greenspace will maintain access to the area.

The city says it aims to have the work on the intersection completed by June 11.

When the first phase of construction is finished, work will continue along 12 Street SW until Fourth Avenue SW. The greenspace will be remediated to appropriate municipal park specifications once the bypass road is removed.

The city advises motorists and pedestrians to plan routes in advance and to follow detours directing them around the construction area.
