CALGARY, AB – Power play scoring continued to be a bright spot for the Medicine Hat Tigers on Sunday evening, but they were not able to execute a sweep against the Calgary Hitmen.

Despite scoring a pair of late goals against the Hitmen at the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex, the Tigers fell 5-4 in the series finale against the hosts.

After Ryan Chyzowski opened the scoring for Medicine Hat on the man advantage midway through the first period, Calgary’s Cael Zimmerman deked his way to the tying goal for the Hitmen.

That was followed in quick succession by goals from Ridley Fiddler-Schultz and Jackson van de Leest before the end of the opening frame.

Nick McCarry pulled the Tigers to within a goal with another power play goal 6:05 into the second period, netting the eighth goal on the man advantage in three games for Medicine Hat.

That 3-2 game didn’t hold on for long however, with Blake Allen scoring his first goal of the season under five minutes later.

Tigers rookie Oasiz Wiesblatt brought the Tabbies back into the game with his second career WHL goal just over four minutes into the third period to make it a 4-3 contest.

Calgary’s van de Leest and Medicine Hat’s Kemp swapped goals in the final two minutes of play, but the Hitmen were able to wind out the clock to earn their first victory of the weekend.

Despite the loss, Tigers defenceman Cole Clayton added a pair of assists to his season totals to five goals and 14 points in seven games to lead the WHL.

Garin Bjorklund allowed five goals on 41 shots against to drop his record to 3-3-0-0 on the year, while Brayden Peters earned the victory with 37 stops.

Ending their weekend with a 2-1 record against the Hitmen, the Tigers now sit with a 4-3-0-0 record through seven games and remain second in the Central Division.

Medicine Hat’s first bye week comes next weekend with their eighth game of the season coming on March 26 hosting the Lethbridge Hurricanes to kick off a three-in-three series.
