MHPSD Board send letters to government advocating for teachers

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Public School Division has written two letters to the provincial government to advocate for their teachers and staff.

One includes a letter to Premier Jason Kenney.

It expresses concern over the management and security of the Alberta Teacher’s Retirement Fund.

Board Chair Catherine Wilson says they decided to write a letter in support of their teachers who invested money into their retirement savings plan.

She says the government wants to manage pensions without true consultation and teachers don’t know if their money will be secure.

Wilson says she has been watching social media posts from teachers who are advocating on their own behalf.

“To say leave my pension alone, leave it where it is. I think they have a right to ask that, it’s their money. So I hope the word gets out and I hope the public is very informed on what’s really happening because it’s important that we stand by our teachers. That’s their money, they invested it, they should have a say,” Wilson told Chat News.

The MHPSD Board’s second letter was sent to Health Minister Tyler Shandro advocating that teachers and school staff in Alberta be vaccinated before the 2021-2022 school year starts.

Wilson says they understand the most vulnerable are first in line to get vaccinated.

But teachers and staff are frontline workers, and their health and safety are of the utmost importance to them.

“And so we feel that because they’re right in there and we have a populated school system, but it’s important that they are vaccinated and protected. We offer flu clinics and so many resources to our teachers to keep them healthy and safe. And so when it comes to a pandemic, we feel this is a top-notch priority for our teachers and staff.”

Wilson recently attended a Zone 6 school meeting, she says area schools are in support of writing letters to advocate for educators.
