Alternate measures means youth not charged

City police say ‘case closed’ on Walmart lockdown story

Feb 24, 2021 | 1:00 PM

MEDICINE HAT — A tip from the public led police to identify the person suspected of making a threatening call that resulted in a brief lockdown of the Medicine Hat Walmart store on the evening of Feb. 15.

The store was locked down around 9:15 after a report of a threat involving a firearm directed at a specific employee working in the store.

Inspector Brent Secondiak says investigators were able to locate the individual the next day, and have concluded the case.

“So after discussions with the family, and some consultation with other agencies within the city, we used a form of alternative punishment,” said Secondiak.

That means the youth was not charged and police consider the matter closed.

Secondiak says the youth has expressed remorse for causing a lot of stress and anxiety for members of the public and the police service.

Different agencies within the city are working with the youth to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
