Medicine Hat, AB–A Go Fund Me campaign started for a local Medicine Hat family reveals the devastating toll COVID-19 has taken on their loved ones..

According to the post, Neil Jangula and his partner Donna Mayer always practiced public health protocols but both contacted the virus around Christmas.

Their infection was traced back to a visit Neil made to his father who was living in an extended care facility. His father tested positive for COVID 19 and passed away shortly after falling ill.

Neil and Donna started showing symptoms and Neil was admitted to the hospital on December 28th, 2020. By January 5th, 2021, Neil’s condition had worsened and he was admitted to the ICU. Neil was sedated and put on a ventilator for 23 days.

Donna who had been struggling with symptoms at home fell so ill she had to be taken to hospital by ambulance on January 3rd, 2021. She was admitted to the ICU three days, later; sedated and put on a ventilator, where she remains to this day.

Neil was released from the ICU on Monday but is expected to remain in hospital for an undetermined amount of time. It appears he may never be able to return to work in his previous capacity due to a significant loss of muscle mass and extensive damage to his respiratory system.

Donna is also expected to have a long road to recovery complicated by an underlying Lung Disease, Lupus, and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

This has put an enormous strain on their families. It has placed their children in a precarious situation, leaving them in charge of every aspect of their parents lives, with no time to prepare. The family is worried about lost income and recovery costs likely needed for rehabilitation.

They started the Go Fund Me to negate some of these costs to enable Neil and Donna to be able to focus their energy on regaining their physical, emotional, and psychological health and strength through this long process.
