Certain gas fireplaces subject of advisory

Province warns of certain non-certified gas fireplaces

MEDICINE HAT — As the weather turns colder in the next few days, many residents will be turning to their gas-fired fireplace for some extra heat.

But Alberta Municipal Affairs has issued a notice, warning people about the prohibited installation and use of non-certified gas fireplaces made by two Canadian companies.

They were made by Canadian Fire Hearth Manufacturing and Luxor Manufacturing.

The notice affects various years, makes and model numbers from these two companies over the last ten years.

Elgin Mann Jr, the manager of safety code services with the City of Medicine Hat Planning and Development department says stickers on the fireplaces will help residents identify if their unit is part of this advisory. But he says there might be an easier way.

“Homeowners that have new homes in the last ten years may want to contact their builder to maybe get some information on where their gas fireplace came from. That might be their quickest answer to the kind of stove they have” said Mann.

Residents with affected fireplaces are to remove them immediately from operation and have the gas supply to the appliance terminated as well.

Mann says the advisory is from Municipal Affairs Alberta, which also requires the residents to fill out forms related to their gas-fireplace units.

Those forms are attached to the regulatory advisory on the Municipal Affairs Alberta website. https://www.medicinehat.ca/home/showpublisheddocument?id=18931
