MEDICINE HAT, AB – Firefighting is one of the most respected and admired jobs around, but those who do it often don’t get the attention many in the public think they deserve.

The Medicine Hat Fire Fighters Association aims to change that, giving weekly online shoutouts to its members.

Fire Fighter Friday was launched on the association’s Facebook page on New Year’s Day.

“We like to be able to put a name to the face for people who serve the community,” says association president Gerald Bodnaruk. “Lots of time we’re out in the public especially now wearing masks because of regulations but when we’re in our gear people can’t see the person behind the mask and the equipment. This is a way that we can put like I said a name to the face and show that we’re part of the community.”

He says they have a few new hires from the past year they want to introduce to the community and want to feature long-serving members.

But that’s not all.

“We’ve got 77 members in our association and we’re going to continue it until everybody’s highlighted,” Bodnaruk says.

Vaughn Row, who joined Medicine Hat Fire Services in November, was featured on Jan. 1.
