Co-op reusable bag donation program supports organizations

MEDICINE HAT, AB – In order to try and keep as much plastic out of the landfill as possible, South Country Co-op is encouraging shoppers to bring in their reusable bags.

And by being earth-friendly, local community groups and organizations will benefit.

Marketing & Community Relations Manager Carmen Hudson says they will donate 3 cents for each reusable bag used per transaction.

Here in Medicine Hat, our Ronald McDonald House will benefit.

By shopping in Taber, their District Health Foundation will receive those donations.

And the Vauxhall Public Library will also benefit from shopping at their local Co-op.

Hudson says the program originally started in October of 2019 but was then put on hold in March of last year due to the pandemic.

“However, we have decided to move back towards the reusable bag program to help keep plastic bags out of the landfill. And to encourage people to do that, we are donating three cents from every reusable bag used in our store to a local charity.”

Hudson notes that beginning January 11, plastic bags will be 5 cents each at all South Country Co-op stores.

Shoppers will also have to pack their own groceries in their reusable bags during this time.

Hudson adds that this donation program is ongoing and they might look at changing the charity or service club once a year.

She adds that she is proud of the job all their team members are doing out there as they take pride in the health and safety of guests.
