Mental health market provides support, resources for community

REDCLIFF, AB- Inside the Redcliff Legion Saturday, tables were arranged with merchandise of all sorts filling the tables as people mazed their way around browsing what was available. What looked like an ordinary Saturday market, actually held a more prudent purpose as the community continues to grapple with mental health and the loss of several young men in the community to suicide.

“The Hatters Helping Hatters in support of Mental Health is aimed to provide resources and avenues of support for Hatters that might otherwise know where to get them,” said Emily Wallin, organizer of the Hatters helping Hatters Market

“ A way that we thought we could get them is by providing a market for local business people to come together and for the community to support eachother in a way that I feel like everyone kind of needs right now,” she said.

The Canadian Mental Health Association was on hand to provide resources and a grief specialist counsellor was also available to talk to market visitors.

A number of mens mental health advocacy groups also took part including For All The Brothers Be The Change.

“ We wanted to come out here today to show our support for the mental health pandemic that is happening here in our town,” said Derrick Lillico

“ We want to let all the men in our city know that they aren’t alone and we all struggle, and that there is lots of options out there to get the help that we need,” Lillico added.

For vendor Savannah Hafso of Hafso creations, participating in the market was a no-brainer.

“My main thing is it is all about mental health. I struggled with mental health all my life, and I am just so passionate about being here and supporting it and getting to know everybody in the community.”
