Jays reliever Giles goes back on the injured list; Hernandez activated

Sep 16, 2020 | 3:29 PM

NEW YORK — Toronto Blue Jays reliever Ken Giles returned to the 10-day injured list Wednesday due to a right arm injury.

Manager Charlie Montoyo said the right-hander had an MRI exam but he had yet to see the results.

The move likely means Giles will not play again this season. He missed almost seven weeks with a right forearm strain before returning last week.

Giles led the major leagues in save percentage (95.8) last season after converting all but one of 24 opportunities. He has been limited to just four appearances this season.

In other moves, the Blue Jays optioned left-hander Anthony Kay and activated outfielder Teoscar Hernandez along with right-handers Hector Perez and Jacob Waguespack.

Outfielder Derek Fisher was also placed on the injured list. He was hit by a pitch in the right knee during batting practice.

Speaking before Wednesday night’s game at Yankee Stadium, Montoyo said Hernandez would only play in the Yankees series if needed on an emergency basis. The series wraps Thursday night.
