MEDICINE HAT AB- A local dog owner is sending out a word of caution after her puppy fell ill after allegedly visiting a popular local dog park.

Cassie Konopek- Drouin told CHAT News Today that her nine-month old Cockapoo Nala, became ill nearly two weeks ago.

She claims her dog started showing symptoms after allegedly drinking the water at the Saratoga dog park.

“She couldn’t keep anything down, we tried kind of like the BRAT Diet, the rice, the banana, the rice water just to calm her stomach down, and nothing was helping so we took her temperature and she had a very high temperature it was 41 degrees.” Konopek- Drouin told CHAT News Today

She immediatly rushed Nala to the vets office, where she said Nala was admitted for four days.

“Watching my dog go from her spunky spitfire personality to this lethargic kind of a blob that didn’t acknowledge anything or me, was terrifying,” she said.

Konopek- Drouin said the veterinarian caring for Nala determined that Nala had a bacterial overgrowth which caused Gastritis.

In a statement, the City of Medicine Hat defends the quality of the water at the Saratoga Dog Park and says the water is safe for dogs to drink

“The water at Saratoga Dog Park is treated irrigation potable water and is safe for dogs to drink,” said Ashley Wiebe , corporate communications specialist, City of Medicine Hat.

The city notes a water sample at the dog park was tested last week, and ” early results suggest all parameters are consistent with daily distribution samples.”

A further bacteriological sample was also taken and has been sent to a provincial lab in Calgary, according to the city.

In the meantime, Konopek- Drouin is reminding other dog owners to be careful when out and about with their dogs, so that no other dogs have to endure a similar situation.
