Government announces financial assistance for Albertans

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced today that new funding and supportive measures will provide immediate financial relief to Albertans affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Albertans are doing their part to keep each other safe and prevent the spread of COVID-19. We are doing ours by assisting Albertans and their families, protecting jobs and supporting workers and employers. We will help shelter Albertans from the economic disruption of COVID-19 now, and position Alberta’s industry and businesses to bounce back when the situation stabilizes. This is an initial set of measures, and more will follow in the days to come,” said Kenney.

Programs on the table include a $50 million Emergency Isolation Program for working adult Albertans who are forced to self-isolate. The program is expected to be accessible through alberta.ca next week.

A utility payment holiday and a student loan repayment holiday are other options announced by the government.

To ease concerns on employers to allow them to continue to operate and pay employees, the province is deferring collection of corporate income tax balances and installment payments due after today until Aug. 31.

More information can be found on the province’s dedicated COVID-19 page.
