Shoemaker impressive in second spring start as Blue Jays beat Phillies 9-0
DUNEDIN, Fla. — Toronto right-hander Matt Shoemaker had another impressive spring training start as the Blue Jays beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-0 in Grapefruit League exhibition baseball action Sunday.
Shoemaker pitched four no-hit innings, striking out four while giving up just one walk. He has yet to give up a run this spring after striking out five and giving up just one hit in a 2 2/3-inning start March 2 against Pittsburgh.
Shoemaker’s 2019 season was cut short after a promising start when he tore his left ACL on April 20 in Oakland. The 33-year-old was 3-0 with a 1.57 earned-run average before suffering the injury.
Ty Tice, Thomas Pannone, A.J. Cole, Jordan Romano and Bryan Baker each pitched an inning in relief to combine with Shoemaker on a two-hit shutout.
