MEDICINE HAT, AB — Alberta Health Services says two more people have died from influenza in the past week.

According to the weekly influenza report released on Thursday, the deaths occurred in the South Zone, which includes Medicine Hat and Lethbridge, and Edmonton, bringing the total to 25 this season.

Edmonton is currently leading Alberta in reported deaths from influenza, with 11 people dying from lab-confirmed influenza so far this season.

Four people have died in the South Zone, Calgary and the Central Zone, while two Albertans have died in northern Alberta.

So far this season, 1,081 Albertans have been hospitalized with lab-confirmed influenza, the majority in Edmonton (422) and Calgary (400). A total of 46 people have been hospitalized in the South Zone.

AHS says a total of 1,381,504 influenza vaccines have been administered this flu season, and say the vaccine is the best protection against the flu.

They add another way to protect yourself from illnesses include staying home when you get sick, and practising good hygiene, including washing your hands regularly.
