MEDICINE HAT, AB — A 32-year-old Medicine Hat man is facing a lengthy list of charges following a crime spree around Medicine Hat on Thursday.

The man, who is in custody awaiting a bail hearing, was arrested at 6:30 p.m. in the area of Cocks Way Southeast. He cannot be named until charges are officially sworn against him.

Police allege the man was involved in a crime spree that last nearly 11 hours around Medicine Hat. He’s alleged to have stolen a vehicle and broken into two homes.

Police were called to a home on Porter Place Southeast, where the man had allegedly broken into. Staff Sergeant Chad Holt says the man was confronted by the owners of the home, and was allegedly armed with an axe at the time. The homeowners were not injured.

Police set up a perimeter around the home and used infrared sensors to examine the home, but after a two-hour investigation, it was determined the man was not in the home.

Holt says many resources were involved during the manhunt, and adds the description of the suspect helped police make the arrest.

“In this case, he had very distinct clothing on,” he said. “He was wearing black leggings, with shorts, he had a green shirt and red shoes, so it made it easier to try and identify him.

“Once that was established, we had undercover surveillance teams out as well looking for that description in the areas, as well as patrol officers who were actively looking for him in an attempt to locate him.”

Holt says the man arrested was previously known to police.

The man has been charged with two counts of break and enter to a residence, along with one count each of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, wearing a disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property under $5,000, possession of methamphetamine, transportation fraud and breach of a release order.

The Major Crimes Section continues to investigate and more charges could be laid.
