Three deaths from influenza in Alberta so far this season: AHS

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Alberta Health Services has confirmed three people have died from laboratory-confirmed influenza this season, according to its most recent report.

The report, released Thursday afternoon, shows one death in Calgary, one death in Edmonton and one death in Northern Alberta.

No deaths have been reported in the South Zone, which includes Medicine Hat and Lethbridge, or the Central Zone, which includes Red Deer.

So far, 181 Albertans have been hospitalized with the flu, the majority in Calgary. Only three hospitalizations have been reported so far in the South Zone.

Dr. Shobhit Maruti, medical officer of health for the South Zone, says the numbers in the zone are consistent with previous years, but adds it’s too early to speculate on the path the season is taking.

“It’s a whole season, and sometimes numbers are a bit lower now, but they can increase later on,” he said. “Sometimes they’re high now, and they taper off.”

Maruti says it’s still important to protect yourself from influenza, and adds you can still get a free flu shot from pharmacies, clinics and your family doctor.

“Getting the flu shot doesn’t mean you won’t get the flu, but if you don’t have the flu shot, you’re way more likely to be affected by the flu than not,” he said. “It’s safe, it’s effective, and you’re going to have more protection with the flu shot, as opposed to not.”

So far, nearly 1.2 million influenza vaccines have been administered in Alberta.

Maruti adds in addition to the vaccine, he’s also advising people to stay home if they’re feeling sick and practice proper respiratory etiquette, including covering your cough and washing your hands.
