Report suggests agriculture needs changes to save climate and farmers

Dec 11, 2019 | 12:05 PM

A national agriculture group says farming needs to change to help save the climate and the industry.

The National Farmers Union says in a report that old-fashioned mixed farming needs to be combined with the latest information technology.

It suggests that’s how agriculture could dramatically reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and increase the number and profitability of Canadian farms.

The farmers union proposes reducing expensive fertilizers and other inputs by using them more efficiently.

It says different cropping practices and including animals would also reduce reliance on chemicals that produce greenhouse gases.

The report concludes the approach could leave more money in the pockets of farmers, so smaller farms could be more viable.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 11, 2019.
