Proposed seed royalty changes on hold
Prairie farm groups have released results of their seed royalty survey, and they say producers do not support the two seed royalty models under consideration by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
New models to collect royalties on saved seed included a “trailing contract royalty” where producers would sign a contract stipulating a royalty is paid when farm-saved seed is used.
The other option is an “end point royalty” in which a royalty is paid when delivering harvested grain from farm-saved seed.
Todd Lewis, president of the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan, says what they’ve heard from producers is that they are not in a position to absorb extra costs.
