Tigers stoned Sunday by Miner, win streak snapped versus Vancouver

LANGLEY, B.C. – Trent Miner was simply superb on Sunday night, standing tall against the Medicine Hat Tigers with a 33-save performance in a 5-2 victory for the Vancouver Giants.

Medicine Hat peppered the 18-year-old with 32 shots over the final 40 minutes of action, however the Tigers were only able to get two of those past the Colorado Avalanche prospect.

The Tigers struggled out of the gate on Sunday with just three shots to their credit in the first period, falling behind by a 1-0 score thanks to Tristen Nielsen’s ninth of the season just past the midway point of the frame.

A tripping call against Nielsen early in the second period opened up an opportunity for the Tigers though, which they capitalized on with a Nick McCarry marker to tie up the game 1:17 into the middle stanza.

Rookie forward Zack Ostapchuk was able to give the Giants the lead again with 3:15 left in the second, tipping a point shot by Lukas Svejkovsky past Tigers goaltender Mads Søgaard.

Dylan Plouffe made it a 3-1 game early in the third period for Vancouver with his third goal in two games, bringing him up to five on the season.

Medicine Hat’s success on the power play continued later in the third period with Trevor Longo pulling the Tigers to within a goal on the man advantage with 4:43 to go in regulation.

Søgaard was pulled with two minutes remaining for an extra skater, however empty-net goals from Svejkovsky and Milos Roman would be enough to seal it for the Giants.

Ryan Chyzowski’s 10-game point streak came to an end in the loss to Vancouver, while Brett Kemp was able to run his streak to nine games thanks to an assist on McCarry’s first period marker.

Miner allowed just two goals on 35 shots against in the win, while on the other side of the ice Søgaard saw his record slip to 6-5-1-0 with three goals allowed on 21 shots.

Medicine Hat’s two-game win streak was snapped by Giants, while the Tigers remain planted in third place in the Central Division with 21 points and a 10-5-1-0 record.

It’s a long drive north ahead for the Tigers, as they pound the pavement to Prince George on Wednesday night for an 8:00 pm puck drop against the struggling Cougars.
