MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Monsignor McCoy High School Colts say the competitive local scene is driving them to be better on the volleyball court.

All four high school volleyball teams have been showing success on the court. The Colts were victorious at a tournament in Calgary last month, and came away with a silver medal at the Super South Tournament, falling in the finals to the host Eagle Butte High School Talons.

The Crescent Heights High School Vikings have won two tournaments so far this season, while Medicine Hat High School has also had several podium finishes.

Reese Bourassa with the Colts says it makes league games in the South Zone interesting.

“I would say it’s a little nerve-wracking, knowing that all four teams are pretty even together,” she said. “You have good competition each league game, really.”

Bourassa’s teammate Brooklyn Schafer says the increased competition is also helping grow the local game.

“I love that with every team, there’s high competition, and you’re all wanting the same thing, which is to win,” she said. “No game is ever boring. It’s very competitive and fun.”

Colts head coach Trina Lanigan says she’s been emphasizing the importance of staying focused and perfecting the fundamentals to help keep the team’s success going.

“You can only take one part of the game at a time,” she said. “You can’t stress about one aspect that’s all about hitting. If you can’t hit, you can’t pass, and if you can’t pass, you can’t serve. Everything is a full circle, that you rely on being able to execute all of them in order to have some sort of success.”

The team has made qualifying for provincials its goal for the season.
