INTERVIEW: Cubs Fischer using final season as ‘gift’

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Cubs’ march towards a provincial championship officially begins.

Dave Kowalchuk, general manager and president of hockey operations, announced the local squad won the bid to host the 2020 Hockey Alberta Junior B Championship next April on Thursday night.

Eight of the best teams in Alberta, representing five Junior B leagues, will contend for the province’s top prize at the Kinplex from April 2-5.

For Mason Fischer, striking gold on home ice would be the perfect send-off to a long-standing career in junior hockey.

Having toiled through the junior ranks in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, the 21-year-old assistant captain is taking this year as a blessing. Junior hockey in Alberta grants players an extra year of play, with those born in 1998 eligible to suit up.

CHAT Sports caught up with the Cubs veteran to hear his thoughts on hosting the provincial championship, his expectations for his final season, and whether he likes his team’s chances at striking gold.
