LETHBRIDGE, AB – Charges have been laid after a youth hockey tournament in Lethbridge turned violent on Sunday evening.

The incident happened at the Quest for the Cup 3-on-3 tournament and began when a 10-year-old player and a referee allegedly got into a verbal altercation at the end of a game.

Police say the 10-year-old player slashed the referee twice before the official pushed him to the ice.

Coaches and a relative of the player then hopped over the boards, with an opposing coach reportedly being shoved to the ice in the process.

The relative of the player and a second man subsequently tackled the referee to the ice and began punching the official multiple times before the altercation was broken up.

Police have since charged 55-year-old Robert Creighton of Standoff with one count of assault, who is scheduled to appear in court on October 9.

The 36-year-old second man involved in the attack left the arena shortly after and is being sought by police with assault charges pending against him as well.

Both the referee and coach who was shoved to the ice sustained non-life threatening injuries, while the 10-year-old player was examined by EMS and was not injured in the incident.

Prior to charges being laid, the tournament’s organizer High Performance Hockey issued the following statement on social media:

“Earlier today, an altercation occurred at our Quest for the Cup tournament. This incident is receiving significant attention on social media and should serve as an example to all about the importance of ensuring the rink is a safe place for our children. Actions like this have no place in our game. The Quest for the Cup tournament is an opportunity for players to enjoy the game of hockey with their friends. For that reason, we are especially disappointed to see an act like this occur. We are fully cooperating with Lethbridge Police Services as they investigate this incident.”

Police say an update will be issued once the second man has been located and charges have been laid.
