Mavs facing elimination following narrow 3-2 loss to Bulls

Aug 8, 2019 | 9:46 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB — Advantage Lethbridge.

Riley Jepson collected two hits and a run, and the Bulls edged the Medicine Hat Mavericks 3-2 at Spitz Stadium on Thursday night to take a 1-0 series lead in their best-of-three West Division semi-final.

The reigning league champion Mavericks now face elimination, and will try to stay alive Friday night in Game 2.

The Bulls struck early with Roger Riley sending a single to left field with the bases loaded. Riley Jepson’s lone run of the night gave the home team a 1-0 advantage.

Medicine Hat responded in the third, with Collin Klingensmith continuing his surging play with a single to score Taylor Wright. Klingensmith, who went three-for-four in the game, extended his hitting streak to 14 games. 11 of those 14 matches garnered multiple hits.

Roger Bostedt sacrificed himself in the sixth inning to score Ashton Roy, regaining Lethbridge’s lead at 2-1.

Two innings later, Klingensmith sparked more offence, tying the match up for a second time off Austin Sojka’s single to right field.

It didn’t take long for the Bulls to snag their third lead of the game, with Kaleb Warden rocketing a lead-off home-run to make it a 3-2 ballgame.

Warden’s blast served as the game-winning RBI, putting the Bulls one victory away from advancing to the West Division Championship Series.

Should the Mavericks defeat the Bulls in Game 2, the two squads will face off in a do-or-die Game 3 on Saturday at Spitz Stadium.

Jaymon Cervantes lasted six and a third innings for the Mavericks, however Junior Pimentel took the loss after closing out the final one and two thirds innings. He allowed Warden’s rocket over the wall.

Game 2 from Athletic Park begins at 7:05 p.m. on Friday.
