Second rounders vault to top of leaderboard at 2019 Medicine Hat Stampede Rodeo

Jul 27, 2019 | 1:19 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Calgary’s Nick Tetz was in rare company Friday night, one of the few bull riders to put together a clean ride on the second night of the 2019 Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede Rodeo.

Taking a ride on ‘Coin Toss’ it was a monster score of 85 for the 19-year-old, vaulting to the top of the bull riding leaderboard heading into the final day of competition.

Tetz was just one of two competitors to stay on for the full eight seconds, with Ponoka’s Zane Lambert kicking off the second round with a 79 on ‘Brahma Boots Smokin’ Deal.’

It was a tough night for Medicine Hat’s Wacey Finkbeiner and Maple Creek’s Jared Parsonage, who both were bucked off and did not record a score.

Jennifer Sharp was lightning quick in ladies barrel racing meanwhile, as the Texan was the top competitor on Friday with a time of 17.537 seconds to jump into first place after the second performance.

Two duos dominated team roping on night two with the teams of Logan and Keely Bonnett and Brady and Riley Minor each registering times of 4.9 seconds.

Those were the fastest of the night, with the Bonnetts and Minors tied for first place in the overall standings with a lead of two-tenths of a second.

It was a slow time of 15.6 seconds for the local duo of Kevin Schreiner and Dalton Kraft, while Brooks’ Devin Wigemyr and his partner Roland McFadden failed to record a time.

Linden Woods and Colin Adams were the lone men to put together clean riders in bareback, with Woods posting the night’s best score of 83.5.

That has put him in a tie for fourth place with Ky Marshall, while Manitoba’s Orin Larsen remains the man to beat with his Thursday score of 86.5 points still atop the leaderboard.

Tanner Brunner’s time of 4.7 seconds is still tops in steer wrestling, however Wainwright’s Ty Miller came within one-tenth of a second of that mark on Friday with the night’s best time of 4.8 seconds.

First place in saddle bronc is still in the clutches of Arrowwood product Kole Ashbacher after his 84.5 points from Thursday, with the closest score Friday coming from Eckville rider Ben Andersen and his 81.5 points.

Friday’s top time in tie-down roping meanwhile came from Val Marie, Saskatchewan’s Wyatt Hayes and his nine seconds flat, which has him in the money at ninth place overall.

The pack is still chasing Texan Marty Yates, who has first place locked down in tie-down with his 7.8 seconds from Thursday.

With two rounds of competition down, the final day of the Medicine Hat Stampede Rodeo will be held down at the Stampede Grounds beginning at 1:30 pm.
