MEDICINE HAT, AB — Downtown will be packed Thursday morning

The annual Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede parade kicks off at 9 a.m., with hundreds of community organizations, businesses and politicians travelling through downtown Medicine Hat.

Premier Jason Kenney has been confirmed as one of the entries in the parade.

The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society are among the organizations participating in the parade, and spent Wednesday afternoon putting the finishing touches on their float.

Natasha Carvalho, the executive director of the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society, says appearing in the parade helps remind the community of the work the organization does during the summer months.

“Our theme this year is growing hope in the community, that’s playing off the mural we had painted down at Station Coffee House,” said Carvalho. “We just really wanted to just make sure the community understands that we’re here, we’re available, and just make people aware of us. It’s just great being part of the community.”

Road closures during parade

Several road closures will be in effect for the Stampede parade downtown.

Starting at 7:30 a.m., there will be no on-street parking in the 800-900 block of Second Street Southeast, the 800 block of Third Street Southeast, Allowance Avenue Southeast and Woodman Avenue Southeast.

At 8:30 a.m., Finlay Bridge, the Maple Avenue Bridge and Maple Avenue between First Street and Third Street Southeast will be closed for the duration of the parade.

Drivers are reminded to obey all signs and take extra caution due to the increase in traffic downtown.

CHAT News will air highlights of the parade during the 5:30 p.m. newscast on Thursday.
