Highway 3 twinning project between Taber and Burdett nears completion, traffic changes begin Saturday

Oct 23, 2026 | 7:32 AM

The twinning of Highway 3 between Taber and Burdett is nearing completion, with traffic changes expected to begin Saturday as crews prepare to open the permanent four-lane highway.

The Municipal District of Taber says the transition will take place in four phases, with motorists advised to expect changing traffic patterns, revised stop locations and temporary traffic controls as work progresses.

Phase 2 of the opening process is expected to begin Oct. 24, shifting eastbound traffic between Taber and the Grassy Lake detour onto the newly constructed eastbound lanes. Westbound traffic will remain on its current alignment during this stage.

Motorists are being asked to watch for updated traffic controls and changes to stop-sign locations as crews make the transition.

The next phase will remove the Grassy Lake detour and shift traffic onto the permanent highway alignment. Once that work is complete, motorists travelling between Grassy Lake and Burdett will use the new section of Highway 3, which bypasses Grassy Lake.

Before the highway can fully open, crews will complete final pavement markings, install remaining permanent signs, finish roadway lighting and prepare the corridor for traffic. Temporary detours will remain in place during these preparations.

Following the opening, construction crews will remove temporary detour infrastructure and pavement markings, along with completing final cleanup work.

The MD of Taber says temporary lane closures and reduced speed limits may remain in areas where work is ongoing.

Additional updates and notices will be provided before each traffic transition.

Motorists are encouraged to slow down, follow posted signage and drive with caution as crews complete the final stages of the project.
