Canadian alpine skier Valérie Grenier says she sustained a knee injury while training for the upcoming season and will require surgery.

Grenier posted a photo of her using crutches on her Instagram account and said she was hurt two days ago while training for the season’s World Cup opener this weekend in Soelden, Austria.

She said she was returning home and would not know the extent of the injury until she undergoes surgery Friday.

The 29-year-old from St. Isidore, Ont., is a three-time Olympian and has six career World Cup medals, including three gold in giant slalom races.

Her most recent World Cup win came March 25 at a race in Hafjell, Norway.

She also won back-to-back races at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, in 2023 and 2024. The first of those results was the first World Cup women’s grand slalom race won by a Canadian in 49 years.
