Man charged after two Medicine Hat break-and-enter investigations

A 35-year-old Medicine Hat man is facing multiple charges in connection with two separate break-and-enter investigations.

Medicine Hat police say the first investigation began July 24, when officers were called to a business in the 300 block of Third Street Southeast.

Police say the business had been forcibly entered overnight through a broken window, and several items were stolen, resulting in losses of more than $5,000.

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from several locations and identified a male suspect.

A second break-and-enter was reported August 24 at a condominium building in northeast Medicine Hat.

Police say surveillance video showed a man entering the building and stealing property from an underground garage.

Investigators later identified the same suspect.

Police say officers located and arrested the man Tuesday in connection with the residential break-in.

Evidence gathered during that investigation also linked him to the July commercial break-and-enter.

Police say a search following the arrest turned up suspected fentanyl, suspected methamphetamine and items believed to be break-in tools.

Tristan Skappak, 35, of Medicine Hat, is charged with two counts of break and enter to commit theft over $5,000, and possession of break-in instruments.

He also faces two counts of breaching probation, two counts of possession of a controlled substance and a charge of failing to comply with an undertaking.

Skappak was remanded in custody following a judicial interim release hearing.

He is scheduled to appear in Medicine Hat Provincial Court Thursday.
