Medicine Hat police school resource officers return for new school year

Medicine Hat police are returning to local schools as part of an effort to promote safety and build relationships with students, staff and families.

The Medicine Hat Police Service says its School Resource Officers work with students, educators, parents and the broader school community throughout the school year.

The officers provide a visible police presence in schools, offer education on youth-related issues and work with school communities to support safe learning environments.

Const. Brent Bohrn is returning to Crescent Heights High School, while Const. Jason Van Mulligen will work with students and staff at Medicine Hat High School.

Const. Chris Mueller will serve Monsignor McCoy High School, Notre Dame Academy and St. Mary’s School.

Const. MacKenzie Kipta will work with Alexandra Middle School, The Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Center and The Pathways School.

The police service says the officers have offices within their respective schools and are available to assist students, staff and parents throughout the school year.

The SRO program is intended to build positive connections between youth and police while providing a trusted resource for students, parents and educators.

Sgt. Travis Funk is the new supervisor of the Community Support Unit and will serve as a liaison to schools throughout Medicine Hat.

Funk will also coordinate the Encouraging Positive Informed Choices program, known as EPIC, as well as police coverage for local special events, community engagement where resources allow and extra-duty events.

The MHPS says the SRO team will remain present in schools throughout the year to support school safety initiatives, provide education and work collaboratively with educators and families.

Students and staff in all three of the school divisions in and around Medicine Hat have now begun their 2026-27 school year.
