Brooks RCMP warn of fraudulent texts targeting Alberta health card information

Brooks RCMP are warning Albertans about a fraudulent text message circulating in the province that attempts to collect personal information by claiming health cards need to be replaced.

Police say the message falsely claims recipients’ health cards are no longer valid and that they must transition to a new “Electronic Health Identification System” to maintain access to health-care services.

The text includes a link directing recipients to an online application where they are asked to provide personal information.

Brooks RCMP say government agencies will not send unsolicited text messages requesting personal, financial or health information through an online link.

Police say fraudsters often use urgent language and official-looking messages to pressure people into providing sensitive information that could be used for identity theft or other fraudulent activity.

RCMP are advising anyone who receives a suspicious message not to click on links or open attachments and not to provide personal, banking or health information.

Residents should delete the message, block the associated phone number if possible and verify any claims directly through an official government website or phone number.

Anyone who believes they have provided personal or financial information to a scammer should contact their financial institution and local police service.

The incident can also be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by calling 1-888-495-8501.
