Medicine Hat Mavericks drop close game to Miller Express, face them in Moose Jaw again Friday

He had three consecutive three-up, three-down innings to start the game.

The Mavs’ 4-3 lead held until the bottom of the seventh inning, with Trevor Syer on the mound to start the inning. Moose Jaw would score a single run to tie the game at four.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Mavs would regain the lead as singles from both Roth and Hill would later convert to runs when Johnny Vulcano singled up the middle.

Johnny Vulcano would later score when Nate King singled, giving the Mavs a 7-4 lead.

Miguel De Jesus, who came in to start the eighth inning, would remain on the mound for the Mavs in the ninth.

He would strike out two of the first three batters he faced, with a Ben Walinczek single in the middle.

A two-out rally would follow, as William Edwards singled and drove in Waliczek to cut the deficit to 7-5.

Chris Franks would walk to bring the winning run to the plate.

Eduardo Saenz would hit a double, scoring both Edwards and Frank to tie the game at seven.

Garryn Plummer would follow it up with a walk-off single to drive Saenz home and give the Miller Express an 8-7 win.

De Jesus was credited with the loss on the mound for the Mavs. Nathan Pisio, who was the last of six pitchers used by the Miller Express in the contest, was credited with the win.

The Mavs will have another chance to beat the Miller Express on Friday in Moose Jaw with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.

On Saturday, the Mavericks host the Swift Current 57s for their final regular-season home game. First pitch is at 6:45 p.m.

Three road games next week in Lethbridge on Monday, then Swift Current on Tuesday and Wednesday, will wrap up the Mavs’ regular season.

They will likely need a strong finish as they sit only one game up on the Weyburn Beavers for the final playoff spot in the Western Canadian Baseball League‘s East Division.

The three rounds of playoffs begin Aug. 7 and will be completed by Aug. 17.
