Brooks RCMP remind public of crosswalk safety after child cyclist collision

The 58-year-old Brooks woman driving the SUV was charged under Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act with failing to proceed safely after stopping at an intersection.

RCMP are reminding drivers to reduce their speed, remain alert and yield to people using crosswalks.

Police are also encouraging parents and caregivers to review bicycle and crosswalk safety with children, including stopping to check for traffic, making eye contact with drivers before crossing and walking bicycles through crosswalks.

Staff Sgt. Robert Harms said intersections present a higher risk for collisions involving vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, and urged everyone to use extra care.

In a separate report, Brooks RCMP said they have concluded an investigation into a report of a man inside the women’s washroom at Duke of Sutherland Park.

Police received the complaint shortly after 2 p.m. on July 25 and initially searched the area but were unable to locate the man.

Later that day, a family member contacted the RCMP detachment.

Officers identified and interviewed the man, determining he had mistakenly entered the washroom believing it was a unisex facility and left immediately after being confronted.

RCMP said they found no evidence of malicious intent or criminal activity, and the investigation has been concluded.
