Christian Doll Foundation launches in memory of Medicine Hat teen

“For us, the big thing about launching the foundation was two things,” Doll said.

“One, it was the two-year anniversary of when we lost Christian, so there’s some significance to that date. It was kind of our way of taking the day back a little bit for Christian,” he added.

“Then to get to work on helping Medicine Hat and area kids and families, help remove those financial barriers to sports and music and arts and all the activities that kids want to be a part of.”

Doll said Christian developed a love of sports at a young age, particularly hockey, ball hockey and spending time at the YMCA.

“Christian definitely grew up a sports kid,” Doll said.

“He especially loved being at the gym at the YMCA, six to seven days a week,” he added.

“We think sports and kids’ activities. They bring a lot to all kids. They learn leadership, being part of a team, and hard work that’ll serve them throughout their whole life, and not just in sports.”

Doll said that Christian was passionate about being part of a team and working towards a goal.

“I think by helping to provide other kids those opportunities. I think it does a lot to remember Christian,” Doll said.

The foundation will help cover a variety of costs, including registration fees, equipment and, in some cases, travel expenses.

Families can apply for assistance through the foundation’s website at thechristiandollfoundation.ca.

The foundation’s primary source of funding will be the annual Christian Doll Memorial Golf Tournament, which raised about $35,000 this year.

Doll said the organization has also received support through third-party fundraising efforts by community groups.

He credited the Medicine Hat community for making the foundation possible.

“None of this would have been possible without the support of our community,” Doll said.

“We’re very thankful for everyone, whether they were a donor, a volunteer or someone who’s going to be a recipient of the foundation.”

The foundation’s motto is, “Setting the tone so all kids can play on.”
