Heat warning remains in Medicine Hat area on Friday, air quality to become high risk

Environment Canada says a prolonged heat wave will continue in Medicine Hat through the weekend and into most of next week.

The weather agency issued a heat warning early Friday, forecasting daytime highs between 33 and 36 C, with overnight lows remaining in the mid to high teens, offering little relief from the heat.

Residents are encouraged to limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, stay hydrated and spend time in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.

Environment Canada also reminds people never to leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles and to watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, including confusion, fainting and unusually high body temperatures.

Seniors, young children, outdoor workers and people with underlying health conditions are considered most at risk during prolonged periods of extreme heat.

The heat warning will remain in effect until conditions improve.

The Air Quality Index on Friday morning had Medicine Hat at a moderate risk as smoke moves into the area, and it is expected to move into a high risk on Friday, before shifting back to a moderate risk.

Environment Canada issued an air quality warning for Medicine Hat later in the morning on Friday.

If a person is at risk, it is recommended to reduce or reschedule strenuous activities outdoors.

The general population is advised to consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous activities outdoors if you experience symptoms such as coughing and throat irritation.
